The Word This Week

Mark 1:14…

Let the redemption of the world begin.

Now that Satan has been defeated in his effort to discourage and dissuade Jesus from His mission and proven entirely ineffective in opposing the power of the Holy Spirit, the work of the ministry begins.

Immediately.

The time is now. “Repent, for the kingdom of God is at hand.”

This message has not changed in 2000 years – and is still the message Jesus preaches today.

Each one of us must depart from following the temporal ways of this world and begin walking in the direction of eternal life in heaven. Failing to do so will have eternal consequences. Doing so will reap eternal blessings.

The choice is so obvious you would think everyone given the opportunity would make the choice to follow Jesus’ instruction.

In case you doubt His authority to make such a needful claim, real ministry begins as proof of His desire for all mankind, and His ability to save all mankind from their sin.

Jesus begins to immediately build His Church, which we are part of today. His Church He built has endured all the slings and arrows and accusations and persecutions of this world and is still thriving and always will no matter what comes against it. He Who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

Jesus built His church with people. Common people. Those you would not expect to be Church leaders. Young men who most would think had no business being involved in the work of Christ. The initial leadership of His Church were ‘twenty-somethings’ for the most part. Young men who worked with their hands and never attended seminary of any kind. Initially, fishermen.

Surprising? Yes. It was meant to be. Jesus knew what was in men’s hearts. He had no need for trained seminarians or theologians. He called young energetic men who knew what it meant to labor for fish all night and to catch nothing. And then to come back the next night and do the same thing over again, with no promise of success, ever – but still trusting at some point the nets would be filled…

These were the kind of men Jesus called to build His Church. And His promise to them was simply to take those young men who were trained in catching fish and teach them to employ those same methods under Jesus’ tutelage to catch men.
