John 12:12…

John 12:12…

Jesus makes His entry into Jerusalem and it’s a big deal.

Approximately 2.5 million people of Israel have gathered at Jerusalem for this Passover Feast.

(Josephus, the Jewish historian informs us 250,000 sheep were sacrificed at this Passover, and given the math of about 1 sheep sacrificed for ten people we can see just how large the crowd that gathered was.)

It is to this crowd Jesus presents Himself as an offering. On the back of a colt, the foal of a donkey which has never been ridden, Jesus presents Himself as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Yet He is lowly according to God’s Word.

Only those who will make Him King will receive Him as King. To others I suppose He is a great curiosity. The crowd seems abundantly caught up in the excitement, which is something peculiar to crowds.

Jesus informs us what time it is. He said, “The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified.”

He SHOULD be…(glorifed.) It’s an interesting concept – that is – exactly HOW Jesus is to be glorified.

Of course we understand Jesus is alluding to His coming sacrificial death, which will take place at Passover. But here Jesus refers to something else as well, that has to do with all of us.

There were some Greeks present in this crowd who wondered about what they saw and sought a personal audience with Jesus to hear directly from Him what all of this was about. Their request was passed up the line to Jesus Himself, and His answer may have sounded off-putting, but actually it was an invitation to all.

Jesus promises if you will but serve Him He will be found in your midst. This redounds to us. If we desire Jesus’ presence, serve Him. Where God is honored Jesus is found.
